I remember the first time I heard this song was actually from a rapper named Erick Arc Elliot rapping over it. Then, I seen it was the theme song for the TV show, "Portlandia." Palm trees. Sunsets over cliffs overlooking the Pacific. This is Los Angeles in auditory form.

Idioteque. Moron. Simpleton. This song by Radiohead always sticks out to me more than any of their other songs. I always liked this song. Mind you this song was released in 1998; it sounds like it should have been released now in 2012. This song was ahead of its time.

Fila sweatsuits. Gold chain. Karl Kani Denim. This song reminds me of when I was a kid in the 90s looking up to the older niggas that were fly as hell.

The vocalist's baritone voice over the running strings of this song is the perfect blend to fulfill the song's title, sorrow. Such a deep ass song...

An iconoclast. A rebel. Effortlessly fly. Truly a man that follows only one entity other than God...himself. The coldest. I can definitely relate.

The song title says it all. My first time hearing this was in '08, and I was an instant fan. There ain't nothin' wrong with a big booty girl!

I was never a huge fan of screamo, but I had a friend in college that used to play this song all of the time. You wouldn't expect a screamo band to make a piano ballad. Since I am a huge fan of the piano, I was instantly drawn into the song. I don't like any of their other songs, but this one is incredible. Great track!

This song is the epitome of American patriotism. Lemonade. Hot dogs. Baseball. Extreme arrogance & bravado. Everything that encompasses the hard shell of being an American.

This is the song that made Bloc Party my favorite my favorite band in '06. Such a great song. At the time, I could definitely relate to the subject matter. Hard to believe that was six years ago when this first came out.

I actually didn't hear this song for the first time until i seen the movie, "Jarhead" starring Jake Gyllenhaal in '06. Some songs are timeless; this is one of them.

Some songs just are all over the place in their arrangement, but yet, we still like them. This song is one of them. The UK band, ¡Forward,Russia! had a couple of songs I liked. The music video for this song is really dope.

"...was it faith that paid the rent?" This lyric from this song stands out to me the most since this song came out when I first got out of college and I was struggling to keep my collegiate lifestyle of binging on liquor and carefree attitude and also paying rent for the first time in my life. That year after college is a very introspective one for most and definitely was a great struggle for me in trying to find myself as well as keeping eviction notices off my door.

The Carps was one of the few bands in the last 7 years that really impressed me (other than Bloc Party and Phantogram). Then, when I heard they had a song named after one of my favorite athletes of all-time, it made me like their music even more. This band was first introduced to me in '08, and definitely does NOT get any of the publicity that they truly deserve. I'd LOVE to sign them still after four years!

I remember first being introduced to the sounds of Australian band, Tame Impala last year. This is one of the key songs from their album that really stuck to me. To listen to this song back to back with 60s bands such as King Crimson would have you believe Tame Impala's music came out in 1969 as well. The music is atmospheric; it's a sunset on a Monaco beach with the sexiest girl in the world drinking the finest bottle of merlot being in a state of nirvana. I love this song.

The sexiest girl in the world. The curly headed one from Compton. The hippie girl with an effortless fashion sense. That gorgeously bright smile that can take my darkest of days and glimmer hues of light. That incredible spiral of her curls. My inspiration. Thanks for being here.

The flyest nigga in hip-hop. Intellectual street niggas. Effortless fashion sense and infectious aura. The charisma of a politician in saggin' Dior jeans and heavy jewelry on. The pharaoh presence. Gods amongst men. I can relate...

This song always puts me in the mood of when I first moved to LA. The first time I heard this song was on an AFTA-1 x GAS'D mix tape from July 09. This song is the perfect song to wake up to. I'm a huge fan of music that is atmospheric and airy.

I remember owning this album in the backpack hip-hop stage of my life in college. I was introduced to Fat Jon, of the group, Five Deez in 07, and was a instant fan of the music. This song is an instrumental that puts in the setting of a smoky lounge sitting at a booth having a glass of merlot with the sexy one (she knows who she is).

This song reminds me of growing up and having to decipher which path in life I wanted to travel on. This song always puts me in a great mood. I remember listening to the most obscure music to make myself feel different in college; it's interesting how now indie music is now mainstream. I had someone tell me that my music selection is one-dimensional. She doesn't know me at all.

The first time I heard this song was in 2007 when I first left college. The year after college and joining the "real world" is a hard transition for anyone. At the time, Radiohead was my genesis.

This song right here sums up how I felt for so many years; give it a listen. It's funny listening to songs from a darker period in my life, and how yet in still, I can relate to these songs in a period of my life where I have come to figure out myself. The introspective early twenties of my life shaped the savage I am today.

This song came out my freshman year of high school. I bought this soundtrack in 98; such a great song. This also was a great movie. "At my man funeral, it's like nobody cares/But when police get shot, the Mayor...everybody there..." That lyric by Nas definitely fits for today.

My first time hearing this song was on Saturday at a BBQ. Something about a 90 degree day in October in LA ad hearing a song like this that makes a great day.

Hearing this song first thing in the morning is inspiring. M83 put out one of the best albums of the year in my opinion with "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming." The whole project puts me on a different planet when I hear it; you could completely encompassed in the music. This is definitely one of my favorite albums to come out this year. Do yourself a favor and give it a chance.

In an age when the word, "faggot" has more weight than a white girl rapper saying "nigga" consistently, this song shows how far off our perspective and pride in Black American culture is. In the time of the desensitized sheep, this song will open up your third eye. One week, a young black man is publicly lynched by police and nobody cares, but you will champion a white girl rapper saying "nigga" every other word is jarring to me. I'm surrounded by clones.

This takes me back to college; the first two years were a time of introspection. Sampling "Can U Help Me" by Usher over this cold ass beat = dope. I've always been a sucka for production over a piano bass line.

This is definitely one of my all-time favorite songs. This song defines cool; this song embodies a smooth vibe. This song is as player as it gets.

The reason why I love this song isn't because my favorite rapper of all-time is on it. I love this song because it was sampled by Sting's "Shape of My Heart." I wonder if some artists realize that they're making timeless music at the time they're in the studio. Probably not. A true legend doesn't take themselves too seriously.

HCG Diet - 30 Days

Well, my HCG diet is over. In a matter of 30 days, I lost 35 pounds. I really had no idea that I would lose that much weight that quickly, but I stuck to the protocol and the weight flew off. I'm very pleased with the weight I've lost. I definitely feel a lot better. That's only the beginning though; now, it's time to get in the gym and get that tone I really want. Overall, 30 days was worth it. The next time a lot of people see me, they will notice a big difference.

Waking up this morning to Mint Condition is a true blessing. I love this band so much; every time I hear this song it brings me back to being a kid. Even 20 years later, this song has a true effect on me.

Every black child raised from 82-95 knows this song. You can't tell me that your mother, father, aunt, uncle or grandparents didn't play this on repeat. "Breakin' My Heart" by Mint Condition is perfect.

1997. Going into the 8th grade rockin' an Iceberg tee. I definitely remember when this song came on. This is another song that reminds me of my childhood.

All I remember is my Mom playing Brownstone's "From The Bottom Up" cassette tape on repeat for months in her '88 Nissan Stanza when I was a kid. Brownstone was a definite memory in time when R&B singers actually could sing.

She Wants Revenge was one of those bands that defined certain elements of me at the time; eyes wide open wondering what's next, yet completely nonchalant in my approach to conformity (if that makes any sense). HCG Diet (Three Weeks Later)

So I wanted to give an update to how things are going on this HCG diet. Today, makes it 3 weeks that I have been on HCG and I am now 28 pounds lighter. It's amazing how quickly this diet is helping me lose weight. For most of you that know me personally, seeing me after I am done with this diet will trip you out. I have some more poundage I want to drop before I will continue into phase 3 of the diet, but so far, I am elated with the results after only 3 whole weeks. I'm looking forward to getting back in the gym and seeing that toned up body that I used to have in college and will definitely get back soon. When I go home for Thanksgiving next month, I plan to be at my goal weight; but as for now, 28 pounds lighter and I feel a lot better!

"Time is getting old...time is over now." A lyric from "Once Upon A Time" by the French group, Air. This song always puts me in such a great mood. I'd recommend you all to get Spotify so you can stream music without having to take up space on your laptop or phone.

Right Here (Human Nature Remix). SWV. All I can simply say about this song is this is my favorite remix of all time; quite simply the best remix I've ever heard. Even after twenty years of its release, this song still has the same impact on me like it did when I was a kid.

This had to be 2006 when this song came out; I remember the first time I heard "The Adventure" by Angels & Airwaves in college and thinking this was a great song.

I remember buying this album on Amazon around '05 or '06. That's when I used to actually purchase albums when I couldn't find them online to bootleg. It was only about 5 bucks anyway, and after hearing this album, I was hooked on this French band, Phoenix.

If you have Beats by Dre Studio headphones, then you too like me experience music at a totally different level. "Fantasy" by the xx sounds incredible this morning.

Now, "It Is Not Meant To Be" by Tame Impala plays; an Australian band. This song puts me in the mood of a perfect summer day at the beach just chillin. This song epitomizes a state of utter nirvana. With heavy 60s-rock influence, most of Tame Impala's music is atmospheric and most people would pigeonhole it as "chillwave." I'm definitely not one for labels on good music; I'll just call it that...good music.

It's ironic how I can hear a song and it defines a moment in my life. "Falling By The Wayside" by People in Planes defines exactly how I felt the entire time I was in college. The early twenties of my life were a time of coming of age and trying to find a balance. It was the most introspective period I've had of my life so far. I have went through many phases in my life (high school: white tee and jersey stage, college: Diadora & Express stage, post-college: struggling to deal with bills and having fun) but I've always seemed to champion through whatever I go through. "...it's okay to be safe."

Mr Brightside. Spring Break 2005. The ironic thing about the first time I heard this is I really felt like I was the protagonist in the song; I was Mr Brightside.

There's nothing like waking up, thanking God for another gorgeous day then reaching for your iPhone to listen to some music. I started the day of with "Time Flies" by Groove Theory; I've been a big fan of Amel Larrieux for years. Seeing not only is she a great singer, but she's also gorgeous.

Then, Thom Yorke's "Harrowdown Hill" came on; this song has always been great to me. Ever since the first time an old college buddy of mine showed the song to me, I've been an instant fan of it.

Now, my favorite song by Coldplay plays; a song entitled "Sparks." The first time I heard this song was as it played in the movie, "The Wedding Crashers." If love had a melodic sound, it would sound like this. Such a great morning!

I was just planning on wrapping up this post until "Standing On The Shore" by Empire of the Sun came on. The first time I heard this song was on a roadtrip headed home from Los Angeles back to the Bay Area. Of course, this was months before I moved to LA. If this song doesn't put you in a great mood, something is horribly wrong with you.

Sometimes I lie and bed listening to music while I write whatever comes to mind. One thing that comes to mind is the ridiculous ego that some rappers have. My thing is, "How can you have an ego when you aren't even a public figure?" It's really bad when you are an egotistic maniac of a rapper with no public acclaim yet thrust your belligerence of self-idol worship on people. If you have to keeping telling people how much of a big deal you are, then you obviously are not viable. I really do not like working for arrogant rappers and dealing with their expectations of grandeur and reality of complete delusion. It's been time to find a band, singer, etc. For a long time; sometimes I am over hip-hop.

It's another warm September day here in Los Angeles as I type away at this laptop looking for some sort of inspiration in a music world of carbon copies and mundane drones. So, I started on a voyage on Monday; a voyage to lose 30 pounds. It's going pretty well so far; I've lost 9 pounds in 4 days. And no...I'm not sick or doing any drugs. I'm on the HCG diet taking the HCG drops 3x a day and eating mainly chicken, fish and a plethora of vegetables with tons of water. For most to fathom losing up to 30 pounds in 17 days is mind-blowing, but the HCG diet is all the way legit. Drinking a gallon of water a day is something I've always done anyway, so it's not difficult at all. I've never had a problem with sweets; my problem has always been with carbs. I will fuck a pasta dish up in a second as well as some merlot. I had to realize that the source of my excessive weight gain over the years has definitely come from my lack of exercising, bad diet, and excessive drinking. Don't get me wrong; I love tequila and brew, but I had to cut back. It's day 4 on the HCG diet and I am down 9 pounds. By Halloween, I will be down over 30 pounds. Do your research; the HCG diet might work for you as well.

I started my day of in a pretty stressful mood until I purchased the Los Angeles band, Pollyn's album, "This Little Night."

Also, I started listening to Angus and Julia Stone's "Down The Way" album on Spotify. I am truly impressed. It feels good to hear some good music.

It's a great time of year; this is the time of year that I love most for the Fall foliage. I love the crispness in the air; I've never been a big fan of the dry, warm air of summer, therefore Fall has always been my favorite time of year. With my birthday of September 22nd being the first day of Fall and the last day of Virgo, I love the transition of seasons. Most people would rather have the clear and extremely warm days of Summer in their favor, but I love the overcast and crisp days of Autumn. Coming into my 27th year of life, God, I am truly thankful to see today.

You know what's truly interesting is to wake up to a headline from a so-called reputable publication entitled, "Thoughts of a Random of a Black Guy." I gave the editorial a chance and read nothing but dumbass rambles to find this quote,

"We can do anything, whether it be drawing, cooking or smoking crack. We can do it all."

Really? I thought you were supposed to be a reputable major publication that writes awe-inspiring and cutting edge stories; I guess not. With the slew of zip coons and ghetto white girls that you love to dick ride, I guess truly talented hip-hop acts just weren't "cool enough" to be written about in your publication. But, this is not the only publication that writes and has the balls to publish such moronic headlines and features. Look around you; you have publications giving you headlines such as "Kreayshawn Takes A Shit In NYC and Feels Great" or "Tyler The Creator Disses Bruno Mars." Why does this feeble-minded shit even matter when it comes down to the music? I guess writing just incredible music does not matter anymore. Swaggin' is all that matters. What the fuck does "swaggin'" even mean? You know it's sad that I couldn't even show my parents or even grandparents what really is going on in hip-hop right now. Perfect example, how some white girl thinks she can say "nigga" every other word because she's from the ghetto. I don't give a fuck how ghetto or hood or gangsta you think you are, there is no reason that anyone white should openly think it's cool to say the word, "nigga."

The irony of all of this is I'm 26 years old and most people older than me would consider people like Tyler The Creator, Kreayshawn, ASAP Rocky, and every other swag rapper and their moronic fiends of fans a part of my generation. These cats are only 6 years younger than me, but I feel like sometimes when I talk to cats of 20 years old that I am really 46 years old in the mind. There's a huge generation gap between being born in 1984 and being born after 1987. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of people I know born after 1987 (my interns for examples) that have some common sense and intellect, but for the most part, I find this "crack-baby generation" to be utterly insipid. They have no drive; they have no ambition. I remember in high school if you smoked weed or even popped a few ecstasy pills, it was normal. Taking ecstasy has been something I've never done and won't do, but with those I grew up with, doing ecstasy was the "cool shit" to do. Now, (nine years later after my high school graduation) these kids are on everything! Literally, everything. They do drugs that makes ecstasy and weed look like some kindergarten shit. You know it's bad when doing heroine, acid, codeine, park-insets, cocaine, etc. is normal now. Then, let's not forget that most of these kids would rather text or email you than confront you about something verbally or in-person. The internet generation is also the crack-baby generation (isn't that grand?!). So, being 17 years old listening to your favorite blog rapper holler, "Swag! Swag! Swag!" over a Lex Luger beat (which is merely a Hypnotized mind beat from 1997) while you do your codeine and cocaine is the norm now. Seriously!

Really do, open up your eyes. Look at how police brutality is no longer a every-once in a while occurrence, but now you can see YouTube videos of black and brown brothers being murdered (literally the 21st Century form of lynching) on a weekly basis. But, does anyone care? No. Beyonce being pregnant is more important than the 19 year old in San Francisco being publicly humiliated and murdered for not paying a train fare (Source: YouTube). Watching the season finale of "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" (aka "Groupie Bitches Teaching Young Woman All They Need To Do Is Fuck & Suck Off A Rich Guy To Live Fabolous") is more important than the Palo Alto, California's former police chief blatantly telling the media she told her officers to racial profile Black citizens unlawfully (Source: ABC KGO-TV San Francisco).

The doctrine of the 5 Percenter is true that 85% are sheep, 10% know the truth and use subjective thinking to control the masses while 5% know the truth and use it to control their own subconscious mental state and try to teach those of the 85% to open up their eyes. Please...open up your eyes. What a grand societ to want to start procreating in, isn't it?

I Mix What I Like: A Mixtape Manifesto - Dr. Jared A. Ball

So I started reading a book recently entitled, "I Mix What I Like: A Mixtape Manifesto"by Dr. Jared A. Ball. Dr Ball is a professor at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. The reason why I had started reading the book was because of this HipHopDX book review I had seen on it. I'm only two chapters in and truly impressed; it feels great to finally read a book about hip-hop and its colonization by corporate entities. This view is rarely talked about and I have never seen it in a book before. I would suggest that you go pick up this book by Dr. Ball (even if you do not like hip-hop). As a young black man in America whom owns his own business and thinks for himself, I can say that just within two chapters, "I Mix What I Like: A Mixtape Manifesto" by Dr. Jared A. Ball is making a truly lasting impression on me. Do yourself a favor and purchase this book.

This is the first time that I've written all week; I had a great 5 days in the Bay Area with my family and friends. It's always great to get back home. The last few days in Los Angeles have been ridiculously hot. Wednesday night, it was 79 degrees at midnight! Indian Summer is definitely here. The plans for the weekend are minimal; I'm going to get a haircut in a few hours. Definitely need one! I was thinking about growing my beard back out like I did last Fall, but I don't think so. Who knows; I might get a nice line-up from my barber and decide to keep it. Keeping a nice beard is pretty high maintenance, but it looks decent if you have the face for it. I think that I've been growing mine now for about a month; last year, I grew it out for four months before I decided to cut it low. I think I might keep it. I have a way of going off on tangents in these posts, but hell...it's a blog. That's what blogging is all about at the end of the day....right?

Euphoria: Sunday Morning

Sunday morning. 8:48AM PST. Peering out the thick purple curtains of my hotel room at the W overlooking the Bay Area landscape, a marsh land. It's a great feeling to be back home in the place I was raised in. To be amongst family and people who really do care for my well-being is a euphoric feeling. The other night I wrote about the state of nirvana I had felt being here, well that state of nirvana still lives within me now. Getting away from LA for a few days is always a great feeling; the contrast of Nor-Cal and So-Cal is more than night and day and more like New York to North Carolina. You know that you are on the same coast, but the climate definitely has a way of projecting itself on its inhabitants. The hot, stale desert of Los Angeles has a way of personifying the image-over conscious (I know that's not a word) inhabitants that live there. The mountainous, sea breeze and forest climate of the Bay Area causes its citizens to be more like its perfect weather; hot nor cold and go with the flow. It's great to be home.

It's sad how the American Dream is actually a delusion. The whole "work hard to progress" is a complete cop-out. Working your ass off to keep your job and possibly receive a dollar raise every year is bullshit. The whole corporate structure is flawed and definitely meant to keep you controlled. You can sit at your cubicle, and kiss your supervisor, Bill's ass all you want asking him if he watched the game last night , but you are nothing more than a disposable entity to the corporate structure. Why can't I find a band that is even remotely close to the talent of Washed Out? Well...is Washed Out even that talented? All of the rock music that is coming out now is reminiscent of the bands of the 60s (such as King Crimson & Janis Joplin). I swear I feel like Best Coast is a knockoff Janis Joplin and that most of her music sounds exactly the same. Bands like the Friendly Fires (whom lost a band member due to heart failure) or even Phantogram deserve way more acclaim than they are getting now. But, the state of media and journalism isn't really journalism anymore. A true journalist used to be an explorer; a journalist used to excavate through all sorts of music to "break" a new artist or band to the world. But, now most writers (even at major publications) are groupies and dick riders with MacBooks and iPads. There's very few journalists nowadays that have the balls to break a new musical act. Most just follow what other publications are doing; the safe mundane groupie route. It's truly lame and sad when you can look at the blogosphere and see the SAME exact content posted on hundreds and even thousands of blogs. Who has the balls to think for themselves? Not too many....

Gotta love gorgeous Bay Area summer nights. I drove home to the Bay to see my family and friends for the weekend. Even at almost 27 years old, there's still no place like home. It feels more comfortable to sleep in the house I was raised in than anywhere else in the world. I sit here watching the stars sprint across the abyss of a sky feeling this sense of...nirvana. No not the band (well...I like them too), but the definition of nirvana being a state of not wanting; a state of being completely content. That's how I feel right now. My father and I had an extremely good dinner at a Japanese grill. It's great to be home. As "Two More Years" by Bloc Party plays in the balance, a slight grin sets in stone across my face. I am blessed...

Dear Autumn,
I have missed you more in the past 12 months; it's a great feeling to know that my birthday begins the Autumn cycle of the year. A lot of people look at Autumn as when things begin to die; I look at it as when things begin to evolve. Leaves begin to turn and evolve, crops begin to harvest and evolve, and people begin to turn and evolve. When someone changes for the better (or even worse) this time of year, remember that it's your time for your metamorphosis as well. I love this change of season from Summer to Autumn more than anytime other time of year because it's the time of the year when you tidy up any bullshit that you have going on in your life. I learned a lot during this month's Mercury Retrograde. It brought be back down to the essential Kevin Robinson; not that brooding, over-bearing stress-laden man so consumed with his work that he forgot about himself. My own personal solace is way more important to me than anything else. I put my working out and my own sanity aside for so long to work on building other people's careers. I am happy to say that that guy has left the building (...such a corny cliche).

Autumn, no matter what they say, you are gorgeous, introspective and my favorite to me. Welcome back.

Seeing Another Day

Just waking up. The dullness of a Los Angeles 7AM morning creeping through my blinds. Inertia wrestles with me. My eyes heavy; my thirst for water, energy, and ambition awakes. God, I'm thankful to see another beautiful day that You have made.

I wanted to get back in the habit of writing as much as possible. Even if it's just a few sentences. This is an exercise that I used to do everyday while I was in college. I'd sit at my desk in my apartment with my music playing and write whatever came to my mind. I had let my work get in the way of what I really am passionate about, my writing. I definitely need to go pick up another spiral notebook. I've always liked to write in a notebook more than type at a computer. I always wrote my best when I was at my worst. I'd like to go back to reading particular poems, manifestos, etc when I was going through a tough time and see how wild my penmanship would be. Yes...I know. I am strange. So what.

Today. I've finished all of the publicity work that I had planned for the rest of the week. On this great Friday, I will sit here on my balcony and enjoy the day. No more putting work before my own serenity and happiness. I did not realize that I had become exactly what I said I would not become in college, a workaholic. I guess you can say that this month's Mercury Retrograde has opened my eyes up to how dependent I have become of my cell phone, laptop, business, etc. In college, I used to talk about how I'd never let my work consume me, but when you know a business, you have no choice but to become a part of your work. But, somewhere down the line (especially in the last year since my business has tripled), I lost the one thing that kept me afloat for some long, my writing. But...I am back.

When I first started this blog in November of 2006, it was introduced to me by my friend, Kameelah that I should have an outlet that can be read for the public. I remember back then (now, almost 5 years ago) when most people had no idea what a blog was. The initial reason why I began writing on my blog was to have a place to express myself in a way for my readership to understand me and see that writing really is a passion of mine. Now, when most people think of a blog, they initially think of a gossip site or a music site. On the gossip blogs, people like Nicole Bitchie and Perez Hilton are literally taken seriously as "social media moguls" because they gossip about other people's lives. In essence, these new gossip bloggers are no different from that Globe and National Inquirer magazine that you used to see at the checkout counter of your local grocery store.

Then, on the other spectrum of blogging, you have those that call themselves "journalists or writers" because they simply post music videos and songs and put their opinions on the content. From what I understood when I was studying my Journalism minor in college was that a journalist was a researcher and a explorer of finding new information that they had a passion for writing about. You actually had to intern and study to be considered a journalist. You actually had to write for a publication; now, bloggers hold more weight in most people's eyes than actually truly talented journalists. Any douche-bag or groupie (male or female) with a blog can post music and slate themselves as a "writer" when in all actuality they are NOT a writer. They are a fan with a website!

It's become to easy for people to moniker themselves titles now due to the overload of social media. Any club-going groupie can now say she's a "publicist" when all she does is go out every night looking for a rich basketball player as an insurance policy to her whore-ish lifestyle. Putting "PR" next to your name on Twitter, and having a blog or Tumblr page as your "business page" does NOT make you a publicist. It merely makes you a groupie starving for attention.

Having a Instragram account where you take pictures on your cell phone does NOT make you a "photographer."

Putting up shitty high-school film class-esque videos of your friends rapping in front of your Mom's house does NOT make you a "film maker."

...and posting your opinion on a website does NOT make you a "journalist or writer."

Titles are meant to be given to you by others; they are not meant for you to define yourself as. Calling yourself a "mogul, socialite, or a taste maker" on your Twitter or Facebook account because you have a blog and a few club photos is truly absurd. I remember when I was writing for free for local newspapers (San Francisco Chronicle) and websites (Hip Hop Remix - which isn't around anymore), I didn't call myself a "staff writer." I was a freelance writer and just like any other thing in life, you must start mopping the floors before you can own the building. It's sad to see that most people have no sense of hard work or ambition, and it definitely shows within this "Social Media is my Social Life" generation which I like to call the "Crack Baby Era" (which is most people that are socially detached from reality). We are in a period of time where people don't have emotions; they type smiley and sad faces. We are in a period of time where people are so entrapped in their cell phones that they don't look both ways before they cross the street. We are in a period of time where people would rather text, email, Tweet, IM, etc (whatever the fuck) their problems with another human being rather than call them and speak to them to their face.

You know it's sad when real actual photographers, journalists, film makers, etc. are not taken in the same high regard as self-proclaimed internet celebrities. We are the delusional and heavily medicated. We are "...half awake in a fake empire." (a lyric from "Fake Empire by The National).

I've bumped my head a few times with things before in my life, but this year was more of a year of introspection. I've learned more than anything this year that progression in one's life is more important than anything. A life without little to no evolution is a life of boredom and lacking of fulfillment. In May, I realized why I was drinking excessively after I stopped drinking for 30 days in June. I was drinking excessively from work-related stress with a parasitic client. After deciding to cut him off, I immediately felt rejuvenated. In August, I had an epiphany when visiting my hometown in the Bay Area with friends whom I had not seen in quite some time. It was then I realized that progression is more important to me in my life than anything else. I have made my mistakes of misjudging a certain few people in my life, but I can say that for the most part, my intuition about the majority of those persons were correct. That leads me to state that I have never been one of creating a new years resolution. Why create a new years resolution when you can change right now? One thing with me that has not changed is me not being willing to compromise with those whom cannot be blunt in telling me how they feel. I have never been the person that held my tongue, and it has always been most important to me (more than any other human quality) that my friends be complete in stating whom they are and how they feel about things and myself. In the past, I felt cheated by those whom could not speak their mind completely about things concerning me because I always felt like I would make it evident how I felt about the person, friend, mate, etc in our time of interaction.

That leads me to say this; I am thankful for all of my interactions (both good and bad) with everyone whom I have ever met in my life. I have realized that not everyone is meant to be your friend forever (more than ever) this year. In my twenty-six years of existence on Earth, I have engaged in interacting, loving, liking, hating, and talking with quite a few human beings. I have realized this year of 26 years on this Earth that everyone will not be there for you as you are for them. Self-preservation is the one thing that drives all of us to be selfish. This year, I realized how lending a friend or family member money is like throwing it in a wishing well. You'll never get it back in most cases. Sad to say, I even learned that knowing someone for almost 8 years and lending them money is the bear trap that can kill a friendship. More than anything, I have learned this year is that I am evolving and progressing in my profession, love life, wisdom, and spirituality. The most important thing to me (as redundant as it might sound) is that I look at my peers that I consider friends to be progressing as well. I misjudged a friend of mine in August as not progressing; I was completely wrong for it. But, as I look for the progression in the other people's lives that I consider friends, I see little to none at all. The one true thing I ask from anyone whom wants to engage on getting to know me and possibly becoming my friend is that they be blunt about their feelings towards the world at large, and even more importantly, their feelings regarding me. If they cannot do so, we really have nothing to talk about. Honestly, I feel like if you have me believing something that you know is not true, then you are no different from the other skeletons in the closet I threw by the wayside. I have no time for anyone that is not progressing and especially, I have no time for those whom cannot be black and white with me. You can save all that insecure cold exterior bullshit for the rest of the sheep that roam the Earth without any true free-thinking minds.

This year of twenty six years old has been a true eye-opener; I'm just only thankful that I have no problem with losing friends. Those that I have known (forever or for a few moments in time), thanks for the life long lesson that I cannot be friends with anyone that is a yes man or people-pleaser. I'd rather the ice-cold blatant "Oh, my God that's gonna burn so badly, but feel so good" truth.

In that past three years, I have went through many changes musically. I hope that makes sense; In February 2007, I joined Last.fm, a site that "scrobbles" your music into charts and recommends you to musical artists that might be unknown to you (like Pandora). I wrote this about two weeks ago; I started it to describe the changes I went through since I moved to Los Angeles. It will make one year on July 6th; it has been a time of distinct change (physical, mental, spiritual, social, etc). Maybe it will better help my readership understand who I am; this is what makes me. The good and bad things that have occurred in the 12 month calendar has shaped me. You see...most people move to Los Angeles and change for the worst; I have changed for the better...

As far as I can remember, becoming an A&R executive in the music industry had always been a dream of mine. I remember watching Sean “Puffy” Combs in music videos in the late-nineties, and saying to myself, “Damn...one day that will be me.” I began in the music industry as an intern for the underground hip-hop group, Zion I three years ago. I began to freelance write for a few publications, then eventually branched into public relations with my first client, TiRon. From gaining TiRon some exposure through small mediums of press, I gained another client, Dom Kennedy that I would be able to push to new heights. In my first eighteen months of working as a publicist, I have done more professionally in my first year and a half than most publicists do in their first five years.

I moved to Los Angeles from a small town in the San Francisco Bay Area in July ’09 full of hope and wonder to what was next. I promised myself that I would not be running back home broke or better yet, heartbroken. I would not let the city bubbled by smog and laden with plastic handshakes break me down. I have now been in Los Angeles, California eleven months today and I can say that I have gone through a tremendous amount of changes in my life. There are things physically that have changed about me, as well as things mentally that have changed about me.

When I moved to Los Angeles on July 6th, 2009, I had slightly high blood pressure and was carrying around two years worth of poor diet and alcohol-binged body weight. I began working out again (like I once had in college) and began to drop some weight. But, it wasn’t until February ’10, when I really started to take my fitness and diet more seriously. I began to run two and a half miles with superset weights in my training 4-5 times a week as well as a diet that consisted of 4-5 meals a day of eating nothing grilled chicken and fish with a lot of veggies and fruits. Now, I look at pictures of me from July 2009, and it startles me to see I let myself get so out of shape. I am still not where I want to be physically, but I definitely have lost a lot of weight. Especially in the last four months, the weight and body fat has dropped tremendously. Now, its definitely time to tone up. On June 1st, 2010, I started a new journey; I decided to stop drinking alcohol for thirty days. Most of my weight gain was from alcohol binge, so I decided to completely drop that part of my life out of existence. I know that for certain if I go thirty days without alcohol, then I probably will choose to go another thirty.

When I left the Bay Area, I was a bit close-minded on many things. I have learned to accept people for their differences a bit more than I was able to do before. Living in Los Angeles, you see a lot of shit that you definitely would not see in any other part of the world. The hardest transition for me in the first few months of living here was noticing how very little culture there was in this city. It seemed in the first few months of living here and experiencing LA for what it was that most of the people here were not anything like I was used to at all; they were not hard-working blue collar people. My work ethic is exactly like where I am from; I am a small-town boy with the work ethic to make a way out of damn near no way. But, then again, this is the land of the lost. This is the one city where most people from all over the world move to live their hopes and dreams. But, the sad thing about Los Angeles is how delusional most people in Hollywood really are. For once, I would like to meet a Tom that works as an accountant, or a Leslie that works downtown at the courthouse. It becomes tiresome when everyone you seem to meet in Hollywood is in the “industry.” I have grown to realize that most of the people I encounter at my client’s shows/concerts are really not in the industry at all; they are mostly groupies (both male and female) looking to be noticed for very little accomplishment they really don’t have. The internet has made it so easy for anyone to become a “professional writer” or “a model.” No, you are not a professional writer, you have a blog. No, you are not a model, you are just some chick that takes pictures in your bathroom mirror. Like I said before, Hollywood is a place of image, better yet, it is a place of smoke and mirrors. Mentally, a year ago, I thought it would be a great idea to mix business with friendships. Now, I have realized that befriending someone that you work with is not the greatest idea at all.

If I had to give anyone advice when moving to Los Angeles in the next coming hours, days, weeks, or months, please do make sure that you are ready to experience something that you have never experienced in your life. If you are from a small-town, get ready for experiencing a multitude of people that have been raised with Hollywood lights not far from where they grew up. Get ready to meet some people that believe breathing smog-laced air is normal. LA is a bubble; most people here treat it like it is the new Rome (the center of the world). When you move here, please do keep an open mind because this place has a way of skewing your thoughts. Stay a leader. Do not come here following the American Apparel-clothed sheep. Keep your small-town charm. But, above all this, come here with a plan written down. Do not come here floating around hoping to make something happen. Be ready for one hell of a ride. The people you do meet that look out for your best interest, keep them close. Do not get caught up in all this Hollywood bullshit. Do not let this city change you. Keep your humility.

What if I told you that I spent this entire weekend in my apartment with my girlfriend and it did not get old at all? This complete weekend...a complete forty-eight hours was spent in my apartment watching movies. The state of nirvana had definitely set in; this whole past week was very stressful (professionally and financially). But, after spending this very simple weekend of just lounging around the apartment with her, everything seemed alright. She had brought to my attention that I would be going through some sort of breakup almost a week and a half ago from reading a horoscope, but at the time I had no idea what kind of a breakup. It was last Monday, I realized that it would be with a now former client of mine. It's funny; I never really believed in horoscopes too much. The ironic thing of the "breakup" coming true. Last week is now in the past; I look forward to the what's ahead for me this week. It has officially been twenty days of no liquor; the detox is coming along fine. I think the stresses of last week had me wanting to indulge in a drink, but I'm glad I did not. The thirty days of no liquor is almost over; I think I might stretch it out longer. We shall see...

Oh, Hip-Hop...You Bore Me Soooo....

This Tame Impala “Innerspeaker” album is blasting through these God-awful expensive BOSE earphones, but it sounds so incredible. I can say that spending a hundred dollars on these earphones is a bit much, but when you want to feel and embrace yourself in the music that you are listening to (like myself), it is all worth the investment. Why spend thirty dollars on some Apple earbuds that will eventually break within three months so you have to buy another pair? It just makes sense in the end to buy the higher quality earphones that will last a longer time.

I recently have come into a funk with this music that I have been working with as of late. All of my clients are hip-hop artists, and I am growing bored with this genre of music. If all you can talk about is how cool you are, and how your Louis Vuitton “Damier print got you lookin’ like a chessboard,” then I really do not feel the need to listen to your shit. The hip-hop genre is like high school; everyone wants to be cool. It’s sad to me to go to these local shows with up and coming hip-hop artists and see how most of these rappers are going broke to “keep up with the Joneses.” All of this “I’m too cool...please look at me” bullshit reminds me of myself at the age of sixteen and seventeen. Now, the really sad thing is when I am twenty-five years old (the same age as most of the artists I see perpetuating this “cool kid” persona) and I can say, “These rap niggas remind me of myself when I was 17.”

I am now looking to sign a band (or two or more). Rock has been the one true genre (since I was 16) that has drawn out the most excitement out of me musically. The lyrics are generally raw human emotions that everyone can relate to (vulnerability, euphoria, etc). If you are in a band or if you know of any dope bands looking for some branding, public relations, booking, etc., please do send them my way. You seen what I’ve done for Dom Kennedy; I point guard careers.

When I was 17, it was cool to hear rappers (like Jay-Z) talk about lavish things (such as G4 jets and Cristal bottles) that I would “aspire” to having one day. But now, at the ripe, old age of twenty-five years old (I kid...I kid...) I can no longer relate to these material things. Hell, I could easily go buy a bottle of Cristal and be cool in the club on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood like the rest of the sheepie, but I’d rather be home and write. Some of us grow up extremely quicker than others; most of us never grow up at all. Who really wants to be the old guy in the club; honestly?!

Advice On Moving To Los Angeles....

Last night, I began to write and rather than publish it as a blog post, or even a poem, I decided to extend the writing a few more pages. Then, I realized that I should turn my writing into a book. Here is a excerpt explaining the many changes that I have experienced while living in Los Angeles. In this paragraph, I am giving advice to anyone that plans on moving here to LA in the next coming months...

If I had to give anyone advice when moving to Los Angeles in the next coming hours, days, weeks, or months, please do make sure that you are ready to experience something that you have never experienced in your life. If you are from a small-town, get ready for experiencing a multitude of people that have been raised with Hollywood lights not far from where they grew up. Get ready to meet some people that believe breathing smog-laced air is normal. LA is a bubble; most people here treat it like it is the new Rome (the center of the world). When you move here, please do keep an open mind because this place has a way of skewing your thoughts. Stay a leader. Do not come here following the American Apparel-clothed sheep. Keep your small-town charm. But, above all this, come here with a plan written down. Do not come here floating around hoping to make something happen. Be ready for one hell of a ride. The people you do meet that look out for your best interest, keep them close. Do not get caught up in all this Hollywood bullshit. Do not let this city change you. Keep your humility.

I woke up this morning and still had the remaining signs of stress and hurt from last night, but rather than loathing around in sadness I decided to hit the gym. I have noticed that every time that I train or work out, whatever is going on with me evaporates from my mind and body. Sometimes, you can truly think you are doing your best to better the communication levels with someone, then you realize that some people will never change their views. I usually am so belligerent and so uncaring of others' ideas, truths or opinions, but at this point in my life, there is no need for beating around the bush. There is no need for me to apologize to someone when in the first place; I was not wrong.

At the end of the day, you will do what you want to do, and there is nothing I can do about that. I can only hope that one day you will realize that I chose to change the darkest element of me, my belligerence to try and better this situation. But, in return, I got nothing but negative differences between me and your others in the past and was completely insulted. Maybe, my friend, Keisha was right; maybe you do need some alone time. But, I do thank you for bringing me back to my senses; I thank you for bringing me back to the one thing that releases all of my pain, anguish, and stress, my writing. For so long I have neglected my gift; I am back with you, old friend. I am back to writing. Thank you for reminding me of this.

Well, Isn't This Nice...

Sometimes I wish I could feel something more than this sense of loneliness and want; the true element of being alone at night rather bothers me. Today, I tried something that was basically outside of myself or character; I had a discussion with someone regarding a difference in opinion that we had. Normally, I would shut down their ideas and champion mine as the victor, but tonight, I listened and acknowledged their own truths. I was completely calm during this thirty-three minute disagreement, but yet, it seemed like yet of a role reversal towards the tail end of the spat. In all cases, I would be the one to stir up the pot by throwing insults to get a rise out of the person, but I was the one being fucked up this time. In this case on an average day or night, I would have fired back mental bricks to destroy their complete sense of self-worth but tonight I did not.

I questioned the person on if they were used to dealing with anyone like me and they said, "No" abruptly. I then began to ask them what was the difference between me and their past interactions with men. After about five minutes, I realized that everything they said was about my line of communication. Every difference that they said about me was negative. There was nothing in the differences that was a positive. It's quite a troubling feeling to hear someone you are involved with say that every difference between you and their skeletons in their closet have was not in your favor at all. But, yet, you were more of a social burden than a social pleasure.
I really do not think I am wrong for trying to better myself and communicate with this person in a calm manner; it's sad to think that every woman that I have dealt with can be as sweet with incredible laughs and smiles when they want to be, then be as cold as the others to prove a point with you. I get off the phone calmly, hurt. Now, it is midnight and it has been three hours since we got off the phone. I would think that I would get an apology for being offended, but I am not surprised. Well, isn't this nice....

Can you remember the last time you felt butterflies when you seen someone? Can you remember the last time you felt utterly comfortable with someone? Can you recall at any time in your life where you felt yourself sitting at the beach in a state of nirvana with another human being? We as human beings like to put deadlines and such on interactions with other people that we engage with everyday only to protect our hearts, minds, and spirits from being broken, shattered, and flung as if merely nothing. But, to put a time line on something with someone that you find yourself doing things for them that you would not normally do for anyone else you have dated before in the past does not make any sense. I sit here staring out of this window wondering if this is what I have been looking for all along. Normally, I had my guards up at a heavy defense, but for some odd reason, I feel no need to do such things with her.
